Automating Compliance as Code

Compliance is traditionally a gate at the end of the development process. Compliance as Code (CaC) shifts these checks left, embedding them directly into the development workflow.

Implementing Compliance as Code

CaC treats regulatory requirements as executable test suites. Instead of manual checklists, compliance rules are encoded as automated policies that run during CI/CD.

Tools like Open Policy Agent (OPA) and Regula allow teams to define infrastructure compliance rules as code. These rules automatically verify that cloud resources meet standards like SOC 2, HIPAA, or PCI DSS before they are deployed.

Pipeline Integration

The most effective approach is a multi-stage compliance gate: pre-commit hooks check for basic policy violations, CI pipelines run comprehensive compliance suites, and post-deployment monitoring continuously validates runtime compliance.
