Real-Time Fraud Detection with Graph Networks
Fraud detection has evolved from simple rule-based systems to sophisticated graph-based machine learning models that can detect complex fraud rings in real time.
Why Graph Neural Networks?
Traditional ML models treat each transaction independently. Fraudsters exploit this by creating distributed patterns that no single transaction reveals. GNNs model the relationships between entities, capturing the network effect of fraudulent behavior.
A GNN-based fraud detection system constructs a graph where nodes represent users, devices, payment methods, and IP addresses. Edges represent transactions, logins, and account linkages. By propagating information across the graph, the model can detect that a new transaction from a seemingly clean account is actually connected to known fraudulent activity through a chain of relationships.
Real-Time Inference
Sub-millisecond inference requires optimized model architectures and hardware acceleration. Techniques like graph pruning, node sampling, and model quantization make it possible to run GNN inference within payment processing timeouts.
